Julie creates her “Mable critters and designs” by extracting small pieces from her watercolors and manipulating them on the computer. Her imaginative designs have an extra unique quality because of her rich washes and textures in her watercolors. She also creates coordinating designs for wallpapers, fabrics, tiles, etc.

Being able to ride the Indian elephants of Nepal, India, and Thailand dramatized their enormity, toughness of hides and willpower, and their lumbering agility. Spending spell binding months observing wild elephants in various African countries, deepened the mysteries and awe for these complex animals. Julie’s resulting paintings gave her playful touches to include with this serious elephant portrait. (Other clothing barely needed.)

The original meeting, the creation, the sale, the painting’s life with its new owner, and sometimes even another world with a second owner. All important to Julie. When the Dawsons traveled to China in 1982, it was newly opened after the end of the cultural revolution (1966-1976). Chinese life, with the grandparents raising their grandchildren, intrigued Julie.

Mourning the disappearance of pheasant on their property, the Dawsons bought 24 deluxe assorted mix day-old pheasant chicks by mail from Missouri. The adventure of raising them included building an 18 foot pen, protecting them from the raccoons, the neighborhood children collecting worms, and Julie painting 24 watercolors of their beautiful birds.
