      Hand games are a great way to play with the children especially when there is a language barrier.  Lots of giggles accompany kids as they try to do “Here’s the Church and here’s the steeple”.

      In some lively banter in a Nairobi market, Jomo asked Peter Dawson how many children he had. When Peter replied, “none”, suddenly a group of people encircled him saying, “Poor Mister! Poor Mister!” The right number, he learned, was about 14.

      And that was the only place he was wearing pants! Julie met him near Ouagadougou, deep in the Sahara Desert, where just owning a pair of pants is amazing.

      In Kyrgyzstan, these 3 little girls – dressed in their school pinafores and hair bows, find a treat of ice cream in the town plaza.  At that time, 1990, it was the only place to buy ice cream.

      When the Dawsons traveled to China in 1982, it was newly opened after the end of the cultural revolution (1966-1976). Chinese life, with the grandparents raising their grandchildren, intrigued Julie.

      In her lacey school pinafore and big hairbow, this little Kyrgyz girl was taking her baby sitting assignment seriously, and beautifully.

      Sahara Wedding 21x18

      On a one month, three thousand- mile, camping trip across the Sahara Desert (from Lome, Togo to Tunis, Tunisia), the terrain changed often from low scrub trees in the Sahel, salt encrusted sand, deep canyons, and high dunes, to vast expanses of flat desert. The Dawsons stopped at a cliff dwelling where a wedding was taking place.  Later when painting from her photo, Julie guessed that the girl on the right must have been from the tribe as her cloths were just wrapped around her.  The girl on the left was wearing a sewn garment. Perhaps she was visiting from a city.

      School's Out 26x11

      During a seven- week trip in India, the Dawsons met these school girls who came to talk (shyly) with them after school. Then they climbed in the school buses (actually rickshaws) and headed for home.

      For nearly 6,000 miles the Trans-Siberian Railway extends from Moscow through mountains and plains, forests and Lake Baikal to Vladivostok and Beijing. Experiencing much of the vastness of the Soviet Union by this train included fascinating stop- over visits in Siberian cities.  Julie loved meeting the children including Svetlana in Irkutsz.

      The Dawsons had an unusual opportunity to travel in 1989 Soviet Union, living with families in Moscow and Kyrgyzstan. Their host family in Kyrgyzstan arranged for them to visit a school filled with obedient and curious children. This is one of many paintings from that day.
