      This portrait is a perfect example of Julie’s thrill in painting animals’ fabulous textures. The all-important eyes tell who lives there just as they do in humans. Also, like humans, animals show many moods. Capturing those feelings adds to the challenge of painting.

      (Only talking about his physical appearance here).  Finding three kinds of rhinos – in Africa and Nepal always meant feeling each massive presence. Their weight ranging up to 5,000 pounds, height up to 6 feet, and running speeds  up to 34 MPH, reinforced that presence.  Their body armor, humorous positions, and plaintive expressions required Julie to paint their many presences.

      They would have called her anything she wanted as she was charging them.  She also gave Julie a great photo for a dramatic watercolor. Up close and personal – wrinkles make the lady.

      Because the Dawsons traveled by themselves, they had the luxury of searching for the African animals in remote areas. Discovering this Steenbok, a tiny antelope, only 2 feet tall, hiding in deep grass took sharp eyes.

      Here’s a funny twist. Someone bought Julie’s painting of a zebra at an estate sale in Ohio. When she emailed Julie (in Michigan) to learn about the painting, she talked about her side business of raising Alpaca. She had 50 and 25 more were due to be born. Later she invited Julie to the National Alpaca Convention in Indiana where Julie spent a delightful day meeting her new friend and laughing at 900 alpaca strutting and posing. These photogenic animals had to be painted.  Here’s one – Alberto!

      Mourning the disappearance of pheasant on their property, the Dawsons bought 24 deluxe assorted mix day-old pheasant chicks by mail from Missouri. The adventure of raising them included building an 18 foot pen, protecting them from the raccoons, the neighborhood children collecting worms, and Julie painting 24 watercolors of their beautiful birds.

      Julie found there are various thrilling levels in watching African animals.  1 – Finding them. 2 – Identifying them.  3- discovering their social behavior.  There are so many antelopes unique to Africa, they can be difficult to recognize.  All so beautiful. This is the Springbok, the national animal of South Africa.

      Probably not what you want to hear when you run into a lion.  However, this guy seems to have a chuckle up his mane.  Painting him in acrylic was fun as acrylics and watercolors produce different effects. Stiff vs fluid.

      Yes, many Gentoo penguins mate for life. Antarctic is the coldest, driest, windiest region in the world. And the funniest if you include the penguins with their endlessly humorous antics. Since her journey about 30 years ago, Julie has painted again and again the silly Gentoos, Adelies, and Chinstraps. And the rugged terrain.

      This guy's contemplating his next plunge into the ocean, and mighty proud of his abilities to dive to 600 feet and swim 22mph. In the water a group of Penguins is called a raft. On land?  A waddle! That waddle and more unusual moves were highlights for Julie in Antarctica.

      Some of Iceland’s salient features include hundreds of waterfalls of every height and configuration, landscapes ranging from rugged to tranquil, strings of small ponies and ----Sheep! Thousands of Sheep!  Big Fat Woolly Sheep! Departing from watercolor, Julie captured the Icelandic Sheep in acrylic for her Wonderful Woolly Wonkas.

      Watching sheep while peacefully grazing, being sheered, herded, and moved is fascinating. For Julie, the next step of painting them is equally fun.  In watercolor, she doesn’t paint the white, she paints the colors around an area to show the white. This duo was in New Zealand where currently there are about 26 million sheep and 5 million people.
