Reproductions: Animal Artwork

Cathy, a long time scuba diver and volunteer at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, commissioned me to paint two watercolors including a list of red fish. The project required a great deal of research to learn about these fish and their habitat in coral sea beds. Two very different style paintings emerged from this fascinating assignment. Cathy graciously said I could make reproductions of these two paintings, which I am doing.

A most absurd bird with the brain the size of a pea, and an egg that will serve 18. Oscar greets everyone with a chuckle, making friends everywhere.  He will be a stalwart friend and conversation starter wherever he is. Ever hear of a therapy ostrich?  That’s Oscar.

Because they also look a bit like supreme court justices, they have a second name, On the Bench. Either way, sheep bring wool (knitters), tennis balls (tennis players), sweaters (northerners), lamb chops (gourmets), followers (leaders), menus (restaurants), and sleep (everyone). Oh, and don’t forget about those judges.

Not to be confused with talking Heads, each one of these guys has a story to tell. They are proud to be individuals and yet work as a team.  To be strong collectively listening to each as all heads talk.  Fun for home (determining who is who in the family.)  Terrific in the board or conference room (to remember the importance of working together.)  Fun for kids rooms (‘cuz kids just like animals.) super in the restaurant or office to start an animal theme (Julie’s prints, of course.)

Also on the throne of frogs is "Royal Ribbit",  definitely designed to frolic (with or without  " My Prince") These frogs are having so much fun, Julie designed a series of pillow covers  to accompany them.

When a national art magazine wrote an article about Julie’s paintings of “long necked creatures” Julie decided to paint one painting with 3 long necked guys.  With heads in the clouds, they tell each other tall tales. Good way to get people acquainted and telling stories. Light hearted start for support groups. Therapists! Reporters!  Dining room theme for family dinners. First greeting for any public place.

Tigers!  So big (up to 500 pounds)! So elusive (in their jungle habitat)! So hard to find! And the Dawsons never did find a tiger in all their searching, on elephants, in jeeps, and on foot, in India and in Nepal. For her tiger paintings, Julie uses her many photos from visiting tiger preserves. In this case, she decided the jungles must be the wrong place to look. Tigers are best found in Tiger Lilies!

The camels the Dawsons rode in the Sahara Desert and on the Opium Trail going from India towards Pakistan were distinctly different. Along with their individual quirks came a universal trait - being supercilious. Peter and Julie's one month 3,000 mile Saharan camping journey from Lome Togo to Tunis, Tunisia was plenty adventurous- and bumpy -in a dated Bedford military truck. When they met some Bedouins in Timbuctou, camels became the mode of transportation for a memorable jaunt to their desert camp, to learn about their simple nomadic life. In India, from their starting point in Jaisalmer on the western end of Rajastan, camels took them into the Thar desert and remote outposts. A special joy for Julie was her camel driver, who, sitting in front of her sang the whole time. His reedy voice combined with the changing sounds of the bells around the camel's neck became a story in her book, Seeing the World through the Heart of its Bells. Our description of all the camels?  Definitely supercilious.

Even if they don’t actually grow to the height of a giraffe (18’) these flowers are from Africa. They grow in profusion. They do give Minnie a slight resemblance to Minnie Pearl.

Here’s a not so subtle way to make a royal fuss over someone.  He’s the first thing you see in one of Julie’s bathrooms.  Nice gift for a swim coach, a gardener, an aquarium attendant. My Prince is saying, “Lighten Up” and “I love You” and “ribbit!” – all good thoughts to surround you.

She just has that look in her eye. A chat with her, will make the world Wonderful.  She is splendid all by herself.  If you think she needs a four- legged buddy, check out Julie’s other animal prints. From Julie’s more than six months in Africa, she has painted hundreds of the magnificent African animals. Maude’s at home in black and white and also loves color.

Zebras really know how to show off their rumps.  Omni present, Julie could easily photograph them from every angle, for many future paintings.

For that new baby’s room, the entrance to your home, or the doctor’s office, Little Guy will convey welcome gentle strength. The rocks and lion feel at home with natural materials.

They would have called her anything she wanted as she was charging them.  She also gave Julie a great photo for a dramatic watercolor. Up close and personal – wrinkles make the lady.
